The Albuquerque International Sunport, served by eight major carriers offering non-stop service to more than 30 destinations, is far more than your average hub airport – it’s a showcase of New Mexico’s unique south-western charm and hospitality, says Richard McCurley, Director of Aviation.
With its Pueblo Revival-style architecture and cultural décor, the Sunport seamlessly blends practicality with artistic beauty. Passengers are greeted by a world-class art collection that reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage, alongside locally inspired cuisine and artisanal gifts that offer a true taste of New Mexico.
“Operated by the City of Albuquerque, the Sunport takes pride in its commitment to delivering a clean, safe, and welcoming experience for everyone. Whether you’re arriving or departing, the Sunport stands as a vibrant gateway to the Land of Enchantment,” McCurley affirms, adding that in a 2023 J.D. Power study, the Sunport ranked fifth among medium-sized airports in the US based on customer satisfaction surveys.
Driving Opportunities for Local Communities
The airport is a major contributor to New Mexico’s economy – according to a 2019 study by the University of New Mexico, the Sunport generates an economic output of $2.225 billion annually and supports approximately 19,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.
“At the Albuquerque International Sunport, fostering strong connections with our local communities is a vital part of our mission,” says McCurley. “As an integral part of the Mayor’s team, we actively engage with residents through community outreach meetings, where we discuss the airport’s current operations and future plans. These meetings provide a platform for open dialogue and collaboration with community associations, highlighting the airport’s role in driving growth and opportunity.”
He affirms that the airport’s commitment extends beyond conversations – the Sunport proudly sponsors various aviation-related activities that inspire and educate. These include guided tours of the airport for clubs and schools, support for the Women in Aviation scholarship programme, and collaboration with the local Experimental Aircraft Association.
“This year, we’re thrilled to launch our first-ever “Run the Runway” event, which includes a special pet walk in partnership with the Animal Welfare Department. This initiative not only brings the community together but also promotes the adoption of pets, helping our residents find new furry companions. Together, these efforts reflect our dedication to making Albuquerque International Sunport a cornerstone of community enrichment, economic vitality, and shared progress.”
Focus on Sustainability and an Exceptional Travel Experience
Director McCurley points out that the Sunport has made significant strides in sustainability, and is committed to water conservation, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, and adopting innovative practices to protect the environment.
Recent initiatives include solar canopies covering parking lots, which generate approximately 12% of the airport’s total electricity demand, equating to about 2.2 million kilowatt-hours annually. The Sunport has also significantly increased its recycling efforts and in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, has replaced several ground handling vehicles with electric ones and installed charging stations at multiple gates.
McCurley affirms that the airport evolves in line with the current trends. “Our focus on sustainability, digital infrastructure development/integrated digital systems, and exploration of AI-enabled processes will move the Sunport into a new era of enhanced efficiency, safety, and security, while reducing our regional carbon footprint.”
“The pursuit of these innovations is critical to our airport’s modernization, and to establishing an even higher quality customer experience. We can advance objectives in all of these realms while continuing to maintain our unique sense of place and the unique character that our visitors and residents love, and that sets the Sunport apart from other airports.”
The dedication to enhancing the travellers’ experience is reflected, for example, in the “Dream of Flight: Sunport Reimagined” initiative, set up to enhance and modernize the entire passenger experience. The renovation includes a full overhaul of concessions, with new and expanded retail areas, along with refreshed food and beverage options. The project, worth around $90 million, is funded through the Aviation Department’s enterprise fund.
People at the core
Looking ahead, the airport projects a 2% growth in passenger activity over the next 12–18 months, reflecting the Sunport’s ongoing collaboration with airline partners to introduce new routes and expand flight offerings. Recent successes include a new daily non-stop flight to Washington Dulles International Airport.
Director McCurley affirms that prosperous development can only be achieved with the right people. “At Albuquerque International Sunport, we recognize that the heart of our operation lies in the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly each day to create memorable experiences for travellers. It is not merely a job; it is an opportunity to leave lasting impressions – whether welcoming visitors to New Mexico or bidding them farewell as they embark on their next journey,” he says.
“Our mission is to support our team by fostering growth, providing learning opportunities, and equipping them with the tools needed to deliver exceptional service. By investing in their development, we empower them to approach their roles with confidence, efficiency, and a passion for excellence.”
“Each day presents a chance to make a difference, and through teamwork and commitment, we ensure that travellers remember Albuquerque as more than just a destination – it is a place of warmth and hospitality. As a leader, I strive to guide and inspire our team, championing their success and creating an environment where they can thrive.”
He further points out that to combat staffing shortages, the airport has begun conversations with local colleges to establish aviation programmes that will cultivate a pipeline of home-grown talent.
Strengthened role
The Sunport is now embarking on an exciting phase of development to enhance operations, streamline processes, and drive growth. “Currently, we are in the early design stages for a state-of-the-art in-line baggage system. The upgraded system will integrate advanced technology, improving efficiency and modernizing the baggage-handling process.”
“Furthermore, we are renovating all 22 passengers boarding bridges that were originally installed over 34 years ago and have undergone only minor repairs until now. This major construction project is scheduled for completion within the next 12 months.”
“We also have to be innovative in finding new non-aeronautical revenue opportunities, such as retail partnerships and real estate developments, to build financial reserves and support ongoing development initiatives at the airport,” McCurley adds.
In concluding, he affirms that the aim of all these initiatives is to enhance the Sunport’s operations, enrich the passenger experience, and to strengthen the airport’s role as a cornerstone of Albuquerque’s economic development.
