Meachers Global Logistics, a leader in supply chain and logistics solutions, has announced the results of a pioneering study aimed at optimising pallet loading operations in the Southampton region. The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Centre for Operational Research, Management Science, and Information Systems (CORMSIS) at the University of Southampton, focuses on improving the strategic location of distribution hubs to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and support the company’s sustainability goals
Transforming Logistics with Data-Driven Insights
Recognising the importance of strategic facility placement, Meachers Global Logistics partnered with academic researchers to determine the optimal location for their depot. Using customer data, the study applied a grid search algorithm to identify a depot location that minimises total travel distances to customers, ensuring reduced operational costs and enhanced service delivery.
Key highlights from the white paper include:
- The algorithm consistently identified locations near the company’s current depot in the SO50 region, validating the effectiveness of their existing operations while suggesting potential enhancements.
- By testing scenarios such as adding or removing customers, the algorithm demonstrated robust performance, adapting seamlessly to fluctuations in demand.
- Development of innovative analytical tools for ongoing assessment and decision-making.
- Optimising the depot location is projected to reduce total annual mileage by 1,237 miles, translating to a CO2 emissions reduction of over 200,000 grams per ton-mile.
Gary Whittle, Operations Director at Meachers Global Logistics, commented: “This initiative underscores our commitment to operational excellence and innovation. By leveraging data-driven insights, we are not only reducing costs but also ensuring that we meet the dynamic needs of our clients more effectively.”
A Collaborative Effort
The project was conducted in partnership with CORMSIS, a leading academic institution specialising in operational research and analytics. The study utilised statistical analysis and optimisation modelling to propose actionable recommendations, ensuring the practicality and feasibility of the findings.
“This initiative is a testament to how academia and industry can work together to tackle real-world challenges,” said Dr. Toni Martinez-Sykora, a lead researcher on the project. “Our findings will enable Meachers to stay ahead in the competitive logistics landscape.”
