As the peak summer season draws to a close, Glasgow Airport has become one of the most highly connected transport hubs in the UK with the installation of 5G, thanks to a new project in partnership with the UK’s leading supplier of smart, in-building cellular solutions specialist, Exchange Communications.

At the height of this summer, the airport welcomed an average of 30,000 passengers each day.

The project saw Scottish firm, Exchange Communications – which has been responsible for transforming more than 50 per cent of the UK’s major airports – upgrade one of Scotland’s busiest airports with the next generation in connectivity technology with 5G, which will boost connection and download speeds across the airport, and smart-enable the building, connecting vital services to the Internet of Things (IoT).

Exchange Communications installed the multi-carrier project, using the latest in-building technology for mobile coverage.

The upgrade will significantly transform connectivity for the more than seven million passengers that pass through Glasgow Airport per year, as well as staff and airline partners.

Exchange Communications have been instrumental in connecting some of the largest scale travel hubs across the UK including Edinburgh, and Belfast Airports with a number of other key locations in the pipeline, enabling them to become a hotspot of connectivity for travellers today and in the future.

Glasgow Airport hosts more than 20 airlines serving over 100 destinations worldwide, including Canada, the US, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Gulf as well as critical links for UK domestic travel and to the Scottish islands.

It serves more Scottish destinations than any other airport and is a key component of Scotland’s transport infrastructure.

Tom Sime, CEO at Exchange Communications, said: “This is a hugely significant project for the airport, which will result in real benefits for its passengers, staff and operators alike who demand faster connections, quicker streaming and responsive technology.

“Glasgow is one of Scotland’s busiests airports so it is great to see it leading the way in the industry, delivering a fast and well-connected experience.

Delivering a highly-connected environment for passengers, the airport teams and the ecosystem of suppliers that support the airport was a key objective.

“From social media ‘check ins’ to touching base with family, downloading boarding passes and planning their onward journey, we know connectivity is key, and with the 5G installation it will be smarter and faster than ever before.

“Not only will this work enhance connectivity today, it will future-proof the site for the adoption of further smart building technologies in the years to come. Glasgow Airport will truly be an airport of the future.”

Gavin Revell, Chief Information Technology Officer at AGS Airports, which owns and operates Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports, said: “At AGS we are embarking on a digital transformation journey centred around the provision of a seamless customer experience.  In the connected world, accessibility to super-fast reliable data networks is simply a customer expectation.  This initiative ensures our airports are ready to meet the connectivity needs of both our customers and operational teams today, and in the future”.
