AMCO

Global Logistics Experts: Interview with MD, Don Mucci

Over the four decades of its existence, UK-based AMCO has evolved into a leading end-to-end solution provider for logistics and warehousing requirements.

AMCO is a global 3PL (Third Party Logistics) business, providing services across a wide range of industrial and commercial sectors. “We have been providing tailored logistics and warehousing solutions since 1983, catering primarily to the automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, FMCG and MOD industries,” Managing Director Don Mucci summarises the core business.

Over the years, the company has grown significantly and now employs more than 270 people speaking over 15 languages. “We truly value our people, and they are what makes AMCO the great business that it is today,” says Mucci, pointing out that human capital is one of the company’s competitive advantages.

AMCO’s UK and global logistics team includes specialists experienced in almost every aspect of worldwide logistics – its wide-ranging experience and skills, together with an understanding and appreciation of local customs and geographical complexities, enable the company to fully meet its customers’ logistics needs.

Mucci explains that a large part of the senior leadership team has specialist knowledge and years of experience within the automotive and manufacturing sectors in particular. “Many have worked within the types of businesses we serve today; OEM Tier1 and Tier2 automotive suppliers for example – this first-hand expertise is filtered down into our organisation to ensure we truly offer the best, commercially viable solution for our customers.”

AMCOAwarded logistics provider

The company is headquartered in Worcestershire, but its reach extends globally, offering a diverse range of logistics services via air, road, rail, and sea transportation. “Our core services include UK Transport & Distribution, Time-Critical Logistics, European and International Logistics, Customs Clearance, Bonded, Sequencing and General Warehousing, as well as Logistics Packaging and Supply Chain consultancy. We like to think of ourselves as a leading end-to-end solution provider for logistics and warehousing requirements.”

“We also handle our customers’ customs clearance requirements in-house, in order to ensure a seamless service. We have our own team of long-standing, qualified and experienced Customs Clearance Agents active 24/7, 365 days a year – something we find many of our competitors outsource.”

To further enhance its competitive edge, the company has been investing heavily in digitalisation, quality systems and training to give the best possible customer service and transparency throughout the supply chain.

These efforts in enhancing the level of service have not gone unnoticed. “We are proud to say that AMCO is an award-winning business. In the last three years alone, we have been finalists in a number of major industry award events. For example, one of our young finalists won the Rising Star award at the Supply Chain Excellence awards, highlighting the impact of our Apprenticeship Academy, and our dedicated investment in continuous improvement.”

“As a business we also won the Supply Chain Manufacturing Award in 2023, demonstrating our value and reliability within the sectors we serve, and underscoring our exceptional expertise in navigating complex logistics challenges, especially within the automotive sector. Fingers crossed we are successful this year too,” says Mucci.

Continued investment in improvement

When asked about current challenges, he is quite clear: “Digitalisation! Technology never stands still, so neither can we. One of the biggest challenges is ensuring we onboard the right technology and systems for our business, cost-effectively and with minimal disruption.”

“Equally challenging is achieving Net Zero. It is the biggest talking point within our industry, perhaps every industry. We have a plan in place to be net-zero by 2030, and we are already ahead of the curve compared to many in our field. We were one of the first in transport and logistics to attain Planet Mark Certification, meaning we are activity monitoring and reducing our CO2 emissions across our business and services, which in turn lowers our customers’ supply chain footprint too. There is a long way to go, but we will get there!”

Just recently, AMCO enhanced its fleet with 5 brand-new Mercedes Actros L trucks that feature many pioneering innovations. One standout feature is its Euro VI engine, which delivers exceptional fuel efficiency, significantly contributing to reduced fuel consumption, aligning perfectly with AMCO’s ‘green technology initiative’.

“The adoption of electric vehicles is massively changing the landscape for many of our automotive manufacturing customers, which means we must adapt too. With new EV product offerings come changing manufacturing processes, increased storage requirements and specialised transportation requirements in terms of lithium batteries etc – so it is imperative we adapt our own service offering to cater for these changing needs,” Mucci says.

He affirms that the company is fully committed to the environment and to social responsibility, and have achieved Scope 1 and 2 targets, with Scope 3 on the horizon. “We are not only investing in environmental measures but are also very much aware of our wider social role. We support a number of charities, such as Acorns and Hope 4 to name just two and have many projects to support the community currently active.”

AMCOClear strategy

Looking ahead, AMCO is set to further invest in its services to evolve together with the changing market environment. Along with its own fleet, AMCO partners with the best haulage companies, so its customers gain access to a range of invaluable services that can revolutionise their supply chain management and provide them with more flexibility, tangible cost savings and increased efficiency. “We have recently expanded our warehouse footprint into France and have plans for the north of England. This is enabling AMCO to service its customers’ needs and geographical requirements.”

“Our expectation is that we will continue to grow and further improve services to our customers and business partners, whilst committed to reducing CO2. To this end, we have defined a clear strategy which is embedded and lead by the senior management teams,” says Mucci, affirming that as AMCO continues to grow and evolve, it will also lead the way in sustainable road freight movements in the UK.
